Doh

“Bob, no homework yesterday and no homework today!  You know what that means.  Detention!  What’s happening?”

“It’s my dad.”

“What, he’s not letting you do homework?”

“No, he’s sick.”

“Oh.  … I see.  Well, so you want to spend time with him, huh.”

“Yeah.”

“Well, okay.  You can spend time here, and do your homework, and then you can spend time at home with your dad. …  Feel better.”  (awkward pat pat).

  2. I’m sure you’ve got a million things to do and you won’t get around to reading a book for leisure for another 5 years, but if you do get time, check out “How Children Succeed” by Paul Tough. I’m in the middle of it right now, and it makes a case for the example you shared with us through this post.

It’s also very reminiscent of Besty McAlister-Groves class at HGSE – Childhood Trauma (my favorite class all year).
